As you increase your presence on social media platforms, article directories, HubPages, Squidoo, YouTube, etc. you may be sending out mixed signals if your profile on all these different locations isn’t consistent with your website positioning — your brand.

In order to make sure that your internet presence is consistent across all of cyberspace, conduct an internet profile inventory every two months. (So you don’t forget about this activity, schedule it on your calendar.)

Here’s a checklist of some of the most important places that need to be reviewed:

- Twitter (if you’re not on Twitter and you have a business, you should be): Is your 160-character bio up-to-date? Is the one website URL you can include your most current URL? Is your photo the same as the photo you use on other social media platforms?

- Facebook (good idea if you have a business): Is your profile page consistent with any group or fan pages you’ve created on the site? Are all of these personal locations on Facebook consistent with your overall business brand?

- LinkedIn: Is your profile up-to-date? Have you joined groups that are good for your business brand?

- YouTube: Have you posted videos here that you’ve forgotten about? Are they still relevant? If not and they could turn people off from your business brand, consider removing these videos from the site.

- Article directories: You can change the author resource box on your posted articles if you’ve changed the focus of your business. Yes, the articles already being carried on other people’s sites will have the old author resource box. But at least anyone picking up your articles now will have the new author resource box.

- HubPages: Did you create a hubpage months ago and now your business has gone in a different direction? Check to see if your hubpage can be revised to be consistent with your new brand.

- Squidoo: Maybe you created a squidoo lens months ago and it is no longer relevant to what you’re doing. Can you revise it to bring it in line with your new direction?

- Google ID: Are you using your Google info link when you leave comments on other people’s blogs? Is your Google info still accurate or do you need to update it?

- Your own blogs: Is your info up-to-date? Anything new that would be a good idea to add?

- Photo sites: Is your information up-to-date on these sites? Are there photos that perhaps should be removed? Or maybe there are photos that should be added?

- Social bookmarking sites: If you use such sites as delicious.com and stumbleupon.com, make sure your information is consistent with your website’s positioning of your business. Every footprint you leave in cyberspace has to be considered in connection with your internet marketing goals.

- Amazon: If you do book reviews, check your automatic signature to ensure that it works with your current business objectives. If you change your signature, Amazon will automatically change it on all the previous book reviews you’ve done.

- Membership sites, affinity group sites, alumni sites, any other sites where you’ve provided personal and business info in order to login: You never know where in cyberspace you may make a connection with someone. So make sure that you check even the “minor” sites on which you have a profile. You want to ensure that you have a consistent message in all these places.

Does this seem like a lot of work every two months? It may be. Yet almost all of the above provide you with FREE advertising/promotion opportunities. You want to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck.

You must have a strategy for promoting your Internet business if you expect it to succeed online today. It’s not hard to come up with ideas that will work for any business if you put together a few proven Internet marketing strategies.

In this article will give you a few ideas you can follow that are proven strategies for Internet marketing success.

1. Focus on one form of marketing your business online and learn everything you can about it inside out. This is an extremely important point because many people jump around from one type of advertising to the next and never really accomplish anything with any of them.

2. If you don’t feel you will ever be comfortable marketing online you can always outsource this important task. There are people you can hire for a reasonable rate to do almost anything on the Internet today.

For example you can hire freelance article writer if you want to market your business using article marketing. You can do the same thing by hiring someone to put together a forum posting campaign for your business. A good rule of thumb is to do what you like best and outsource the rest.

3. Initially when you’re first starting your online business one idea is to try a few free advertising methods before you begin spending money. There are many ways you can advertise on the Internet and do it for free.

Some of the most successful include posting comments on other people’s blogs, blogging, social marketing, article marketing, classified ad directories, and so on. Anything you can do to get your website address on somebody else’s website is potential traffic for you and a strategy worth looking into.

4. As you begin to look at various forms of Internet marketing you’ll find some that you find more enticing than others. These are the ones you should concentrate on.

To build a successful business on the Internet today you really only need a couple of productive Internet marketing methods. The matter fact there are many examples of people who only do a couple of floors of Internet marketing and make over a six figure income that way.

The bottom line is your online business will not be successful if you do not promote it. The more visitors you have coming to your website the more potential money you will make.

Therefore you need to concentrate on learning multiple Internet marketing strategies and then use a couple until you have the amount of traffic and sales your business is looking for!

Article marketing newbies ask that question a lot–”When will I start to get more traffic?”

As you’re just starting out, there are some mental and emotional hurdles to overcome. If you don’t manage your expectations wisely, you can set yourself up for disappointment.

I’ve taken some of the most frequently asked questions/concerns related to marketing a brand new website or newly trying to drive traffic to an existing website.

Hopefully reading these questions and answers will help you to be realistic in what you can expect and allow you to focus on reaching your long term goals.

Question 1: I’ve just started marketing my website: Can I see immediate results by using Article Marketing or any other type of online marketing tool?

Answer: While you may see some initial traffic coming from the articles themselves (people reading the articles and clicking the link in your resource box), do not expect to receive a steady flow of traffic right off the bat.

You will not submit 1, 2, 3 or even a dozen articles and experience the results that article marketing is capable of. Why?

Article marketing is a long term marketing tool. The primary way that it drives traffic to a website is through an increase in search engine ranking. Ideally, the longer you market your website, the higher your search engine ranking will rise. As your search engine ranking rises higher and higher, you receive more traffic.

So, when you’re doing article marketing (or any other type of website marketing), the idea is to focus on changing your search engine ranking.

Any burst of traffic that you receive from a single article will likely fade pretty quickly, but an elevated search engine ranking has a longer effect.

With marketing your website, the idea is to build an enduring source of traffic that continues to build over the lifetime of your website. Don’t get caught up in results from a single article–focus on the big picture.

Question 2: How does Article Marketing impact my search engine ranking?

Answer: When someone types in your keyword terms into Google, they are greeted with a list of results that are organized in order of those most likely to satisfy the search terms at the top. So, the top ranking site in the results list has the best chance of providing you with what you’re looking for, by Google’s estimation.

How does Google decide which sites have the best chance of satisfying the user’s search terms? Google tries to determine the authority of a website. One of the main ways that they make this determination is through calculating the number of backlinks coming into a site. By increasing the number of backlinks to your site, you can impact your search engine ranking.

This is where article marketing comes in: each article that you submit will contain a resource box (author bio) that also contains a link back to your website. Every time your article (your free reprint article) is reprinted, your resource box is also reprinted, gaining you a backlink to your site.

Article marketing builds links–this is a key component to influencing your search engine ranking.

Question 3: How long does it take to see results on my search engine ranking?

With this question, we are all at the mercy of the timelines of Google and the other search engines. Usually, Google will re-visit a website every 3-4 months to re-calculate the links. If you site is brand new, however, it needs to be indexed first, so for a brand new site it can take 5 months or so to see an impact from your initial efforts.

So, when you submit an article the links are not calculated immediately–it will likely be 3-4 months before your new backlinks show up in Google (longer if your site is brand new).

Question 4: I am seriously interested in doing article marketing–how do I go about this?

It’s pretty simple:

*Submit articles consistently over the long term. Submitting 8 articles a month per site is sufficient.

*Do not expect immediate results–know that you will not see your initial results until you have been consistently submitting articles for 3-4 month on an existing site, or at least 5 months on a brand new site.

Article marketing is a popular and time proven tool for driving traffic to a website, but you need to have realistic expectations when you’re just starting out. Article marketing is a long term marketing tool–when you’re beginning, keep that in mind and plan on integrating article submissions into your marketing plan for the lifetime of your website.
